Banners of the Labour Movement

Banner, Energy and Chemical Workers Union

1990, cotton, appliqué, paint
Created by Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge
Donation of the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union

This large banner commissioned by the Energy and Chemical Workers Union (ECWU), was the first of a series that visual artists Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge produced for various union locals. ECWU grew out of the American Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union. The ECWU later merged with the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union, a predecessor of UNIFOR.

Like the earliest banners in our collection, this banner has images painted on both sides, and a decorative fringe. The banner combines traditional banner design with more modern designs and techniques. It highlights racial and gender diversity, and the benefits of union membership: collective bargaining; direct action; health and safety; and worker training and education.
